Unemployment is one of the largest challenges the world is currently facing. The effect of unemployment extends from personal to international levels affecting living standards, causing severe financial hardship, poverty, and delaying overall economic growth of nations. Ethiopia's youthful population is incredible asset and untapped resource for positive growth. Of Ethiopia's population estimated at 121 million, 41% is underage of 15 and more than 28% is aged 15-29. Ethiopian youth unemployment rate for 2021 was 5.72%, a 0.78% increase from 2020 according to world bank data.
Accordingly, Backa community development association (BCDA) is working on promoting sustainable youth and women employment and decent work through improving the skills and learning environment for young people (especially young women).
BCDA aims to enable more than 2,000 young people to access dignified and decent work by 2025.
